Key West Ford Wants Drivers To Understand The Inertia Principle This Winter

Tags:
(Posted on Feb 8, 2014 at 04:47PM by Lee Byard)

how inertia works when drivingDrivers spare few thoughts for gravity. Their concerns instead center around protecting their Fusions, Mustangs and Explorers against harsh winter storms.

Key West Ford suggests mastering more than oil filters and fuel lines this season, however. Learn how inertia can impact driving.

The inertia principle is a simple one: it describes how an object remains in a state of motion, resisting changes in velocity. This is often applied to cars, proving how wheels will always spin unless they're forced to stop. This proves both helpful and harmful during the winter.

The Value of Inertia

Drivers are warned not to accelerate too quickly during cold weather. Pumping the pedals only serves to overload the engine and undo traction. Inertia compensates for this lack of power, naturally - and efficiently - helping vehicles move. It gathers speed from downhill drives and turns, letting cars roll forward and reducing the need for gas.

The Danger of Inertia

While inertia allows drivers to move steadily, it can also prove difficult to contain. Arriving at the base of a hill, for example, doesn’t result in a sudden stop (which is needed). Instead a car will be carried by its own weight, past signs or traffic lights. Inertia utilizes friction as a form of transportation and, if not countered with careful braking and deceleration techniques, it can cause collisions.

Understanding how inertia works is the key to safe driving. Utilize it to reduce the need for gas, but always maintain subtle pressure on the brakes while descending to keep it under control. Be aware of vehicle speeds and maintain a ten second following distance between other cars to reduce worries of crashing.

Recognize the advantages - and potential troubles - of inertia this winter.

Key West Ford Encourages Drivers To Go Slow This Season

Tags:
(Posted on Feb 8, 2014 at 04:33PM by Lee Byard)

drive slow in winterFord drivers crave the open road. They want fast speeds and roaring engines - and cars like the signature Mustang or the Eco-boost enhanced Fusion deliver them both.

As the winter season rolls on, however, Key West Ford urges all drivers to slow down.

Cold weather breeds chaos. Once safe roads become slick, crusted with ice, sleet and dirty snow. Drivers must, therefore, learn to adapt to these conditions by decreasing their speeds. Avoid fast accelerations or abrupt stops whenever possible, reducing average ratios by up to fifteen miles per hour. Applying extra thrust causes nothing more than spinning wheels. Gently press the pedals instead to maintain traction.

Driving slowly is essential in the winter. Remember that it will impact work, errands more, however, so shift all schedules accordingly. Allow extra time to do everyday activities.

Key West Ford wants every driver to be safe this February. We urge everyone to slow down and be careful.

Key West Ford Suggests Increasing Your Following Distance This Winter

Tags:
(Posted on Feb 8, 2014 at 04:19PM by Lee Byard)

increase following distance in winterYou are rarely alone on the road. Every mile seems to bring yet another driver, yet another car; and you share the highways, byways and intersections with the rest of the world's travelers.

Sharing the streets during winter, however, can prove dangerous - unless you maintain a proper following distance.

The following distance is the length between cars. It’s measured in time rather than inches and, during warm months, it’s recommended to maintain three to five seconds. This allows drivers to easily adapt to changes in traffic, road conditions and more.

As the weather turns cold, however, that time becomes far too short. Black ice, sleet and heavy rain can transform asphalt into a series of accidents, and drivers must prepare for all inevitabilities. They must, therefore, increase their following distances.

Key West Ford recommends leaving up to ten seconds between vehicles. This allows all drivers - including you - to better adjust to sudden stops, skids or collisions. Move at a slow and steady pace, and maintain a sizable gap between all cars.

Winter driving is never easy. Increasing your following distance, however, can make it manageable.

Key West Ford Recommends Avoiding The Emergency Brake This Winter

Tags:
(Posted on Feb 8, 2014 at 04:00PM by Lee Byard)

avoid emergency brake in winterA patch of ice, a sudden skid, and your car goes barreling toward a ditch. High speeds and violent spins leave you terrified - which is why you wrench back the emergency brake, desperate to slow down.

That plan, however, fails.

Your emergency brake doesn’t stop the impending crash. It doesn’t do anything.

Key West Ford reminds drivers to avoid using their emergency brakes whenever possible this winter. While this may seem counter-intuitive, the truth is that this particular technology often proves useless in cold climates.

Plunging temperatures wreak havoc on emergency brakes. The cables, which are rarely used and poorly protected, become coated in heavy frost and ice. This causes corrosion, which directly impacts the release strength. Lines are more likely to snap and this can have dangerous effects on the road.

It’s recommended, therefore, to keep emergency brakes properly serviced during the winter. Have them inspected regularly and park your vehicle beneath a shelter (this will reduce exposure to ice).

Note that even these measures may not be enough to keep emergency brakes in top form. Avoiding them is the best solution. Rely on decreased speeds and careful steering instead.

Key West Ford Urges Drivers To Avoid Cruise Control This Winter

Tags:
(Posted on Feb 7, 2014 at 11:00AM by Lee Byard)

car stuck in snow canadaFord drivers love their cruise controls - and it’s no wonder why. Intuitive technologies keep travelers on the right track, detecting changes in traffic, road structure and more. Maintaining perfect speeds is a simple feat.

As winter continues to roll through New Westminster, however, that feat becomes impossible.

Key West Ford urges all drivers to avoid using their cruise controls this season. Though Ford vehicles boast the latest innovations - such as the Fusion’s brake-assist systems or the Taurus' radar sensors - travelers can easily find themselves slipping and sliding. Snow, sleet and ice make for dangerous companions, and cruise functions can’t properly adapt to them.

Learn to accelerate and decelerate as needed instead. Rely on steady pressure to maintain traction, and avoid sudden bursts of speed. This will help all vehicles to remain in their proper lanes (rather than skidding into ditches).

Key West Ford Recommends Filling The Tank This Winter

Tags:
(Posted on Feb 7, 2014 at 10:43AM by Lee Byard)

keep tanks full in winter driving canadaGas prices are forever soaring. Drivers empty their wallets in the name of transportation, and the open road seems less appealing when it breaks the budget.

Travelers, therefore, try to siphon every drop of fuel. They power their engines on fumes and sheer determination, refusing to pay more than is absolutely necessary.

This is an understandable thought. It’s just not a safe one.

Key West Ford reminds all drivers to keep their tanks full this winter. Fuel lines, when empty, have a terrible tendency to freeze. Air floods the interior and creates moisture, which then settles in the lines and causes frost to form. Without consistent levels of fuel to counter it, that frost soon hardens and directly impacts engine capabilities. Vehicles can refuse to start or can even suddenly stop while on the road.

This must be avoided.

Key West Ford recommends that drivers keep their tanks (at least) halfway full during cold months. This will defend against frost and ensure that every car functions properly.

Ford CEO Allan Mulally Dismisses Microsoft Rumors

Tags:
(Posted on Feb 1, 2014 at 07:22AM by Lee Byard)

alan mulally fordRumors shape the automotive industry. Insiders are always sharing secrets, gossip and assumptions.

Key West Ford is happy to report, however, that one particular assumption has proven to be false.

Alan Mulally - Chief Executive Officer of Ford, noted for transforming declining market shares into powerhouse performers - is not abandoning the second largest automaker in North America. Speculations have swirled about Mulally leaving Ford to join the Microsoft team. A statement released in January 2014, however, dismissed these claims.

“I have no other plans to do anything other than serve Ford,” said Mulally, effectively quashing concerns.

Mulally began his Ford career in 2006, after serving as an engineer and program manager for the Boeing company. At the time the automaker was known only for waning sales. Mulally changed this, however, by introducing a fleet of new vehicles, eliminating unnecessary expenses and redefining the North American brand.

Through his dedication Ford experienced a series of profitable quarters, once again becoming a premier manufacturer and trend-setter.

Key West Ford is pleased that Alan Mulally will remain a vital - and vocal - figure in the automotive industry. We’re excited to see how he will continue to shape the market for many years to come.
